This weekend we drove to New Hampshire to pick our daughter, Ellie, up from the University of New Hampshire. After a nice dinner with her and her roommates, we visited two of the local cemeteries. I have to give a shout out to my husband who longed to be at a pub instead stomping through a graveyard with all us girls, hoping to spot a ghost. We did hit a nice pub afterwards.
First stop, Proprietor's Burial Ground, established 1831. Before the land became a burying ground, Portsmouth publicly executed Ruth Blay in 1768 for concealing the birth of her illegitimate baby. She's buried in an unmarked grave somewhere at the bottom of the hill.
Next stop, Point of Graves Burial Ground established 1671. A half acre plot, situated between two house, this is then oldest cemetery in Portsmouth, NH. Many prominent citizens of the time are buried there, along with strange occurrences.
Visitors have reported "footfalls" directly behind them as well as ghostly figures lurking. The biggest attraction is the Vaughan Tomb. Mr. Vaughan passed in 1864 and while he has the grandest tomb in the place, strange lights and an odd glow have been seen by many - including the man who checked us in at the hotel. He grew up in Portsmouth and swore he had seen it in person. No one is exactly sure what causes it. Lovers of the paranormal believe it's supernatural, skeptics believe there is phosphorous in the stone.
Yes, Mr. Vaughan is pretty much resting in those people's driveway. Apparently they don't seem to mind. I'm sure he and his family (wife and sons) are quiet neighbors, except for the occasional glowing.
As you probably guessed, nothing strange happened while we were there. Sigh! But we'll keep searching. Luckily, for my husband, Portsmouth has a haunted pub tour that I'll make sure we get on in August when we go back. We may also cross the bridge into Maine. I've heard many ghosts await us in the Pine Tree State.
Let me leave you with a picture of the cemetery from the Portsmouth Historical Society so you can see how old and awesome it is.
Stay tuned for more in my quest to find a ghost…..
