Happy New Year! Welcome to the 6th Annual No Kiss Blog Fest! A huge thank you to Amanda K. Byrne, author of sexy, snarky romance and Urban Fantasy for hosting and organizing this fun event. Check out all the awesome participating authors here on Amanda’s page - after you read her 'almost kiss.' My excerpt is from a new paranormal character I’m developing and working on named Spookie Millane. Spookie has a unique ability when it comes to those in the process of passing over to the next realm. It's a WIP and hasn't been edited - Thankfully, I caught and fixed a few glaring atrocities before I posted - so with that in mind, enjoy!! *** Sean steals a glance. I catch him. He counters with a devilish grin and glimmer of desire in his eye but remains focused on our task. Trimming my Christmas tree. I’ve dropped subtle clues. Nothing. I’ve dumped buckets of hints over his head that scream I’m ready to take our relationship to the next level. We remain ‘best buddies.’ I hang the last Jack Skellington ornament on a sturdy branch in the center of the tree, next to his love Sally. The glow from the twinkling red light makes her appear to blush at their closeness. I shove the stack of empty decoration boxes toward the basement door. “Spookie, I'll take care of that later. Here.” Sean offers me a cup of eggnog. “Come sit by the fire.” “The tree looks beautiful. Thanks for your help.” I take the eggnog and curl up on the loveseat leaving room for another person next to me. Sean walks by and sprawls out on his side under the tree, leaning on his elbow. Ridiculously handsome in dark jeans and black pin-stripped shirt, the fire surrounds him in a sensual aura. I ogle like a teenage geek. I’m sure my mouth is open and drool is running down my chin but I’m helpless. Damn him, can’t he see what he does to me? “Spookie?” “Mmm? What? Oh, sorry. Just, um, somewhere else for a minute.” I sip Sean’s homemade eggnog. The warm, rich consistency with the perfect hint of rum lingers on my tongue. I place the glass on the table next to me and open the side drawer. “Do you have a girlfriend?” “If I did, I don’t think she’d appreciate the amount time I spend with you.” “Then what’s the problem?” “Problem?” He stares into his drink and tucks a strand of his long hair behind his ear. “We’ve spent a lot of time together the last two months. I thought I’d been clear about my feelings but I guess you didn’t notice.” “I noticed.” His hazel eyes lock with mine. “I wouldn’t be here so often if I didn’t have feelings for you.” “Then why haven’t you kissed me?” I grab what I need from the drawer, gather my courage and attempt to gracefully stretch out beside him. “It can’t be for lack of mistletoe.” I dangle the live bow of greens and white berries over my head. “The story goes that every time a man kisses a girl under the mistletoe, he picks a berry. He has the pleasure of kissing her until the last berry is plucked, then the privilege is over,” Sean explains. “I’ve counted at least twenty berries.” His finger strokes my cheek then traces my lips. “Spookie, I did something a long time ago I’m not proud of. I’ve tried to tell you, but it’s hard for me to talk about. You may change your mind about kissing me.” “Leave the past where it belongs. I care about right now. Look.” I inch closer to him. “Do you want kiss me or not?” “I’ve wanted to kiss you since Halloween.” Sean slid his arm under my waist, rolling me on my back. He body sways on top of mine and he takes the mistletoe, freeing my hands. I wrap my arms around his neck. He snaps a white berry off the plant and places it under the tree. “One.” He lowers his lips to mine. I want to taste the cinnamon on his breath and raise my head to meet him. “Bonsoir, Mademoiselle. Spookie Millane?” A husky male voice asks. “Excuse me. Spookie Millane? Are you Spookie Millane?” Squeals a female voice. My body slumps and my head hit the floor with a thud. “Not now,” I groan. “Are they here?” Sean whispers. “The nearly departed?” His eyes dart from one side of the room to the other. Two translucent figures hover above Sean and I. Their frame is outlined in gold, their energy pulses peace and serenity, and they are far more patient than I. “Yes. Sorry, they can pop up at inopportune times.” “Shh, they’ll hear you.” Sean pulls me to my feet, kisses two of his fingers and places them on my lips. “Go help them, love. We’ll save this for later.” He tucks the greens into the shirt pocket over his heart. I face the two apparitions who are now floating at eye level. “Yes, I’m Spookie. Welcome to my home. What can I do for you this evening?” *** Follow me on Twitter: @DebChristiana Facebook: Debbie Christiana, Author "Thousands of candles can lit from a signle candle and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
